Abigail believes that this man -- Peter de Windt -- must be a good man if he is asking Caroline to marry him because she isn't all that attractive. She says, clearly he wasn't given to 'fashionable pleasure' (389). Then there is Abigail -- Charles' daughter -- who has become a sort of religious zealot and Abigail Adams fears that it will be difficult for her to find a husband as well. This chapter really shows the importance of having a husband in those days. Abigail is pleased that her namesake -- Abbe -- marries well and her husband is able to take care not only of his wife, but his wife's mother as well. The relief Abigail Adams gets from knowing that her grandchildren will be taken care of is evident. Being comfortable and not having to worry about money is something that Abigail wishes for all of her children and grandchildren and it is this sentiment that is pervasive throughout the entire book.

The end of the book is interesting and ends in a way that is not surprising, with Abigail's small fortune being distributed amongst her children and female grandchildren, but excluding all of her male descendents (other than her own sons).
The book ends with another affirmation of how Abigail owned her own property, though as a woman this was something that she wasn't supposed to have. She showed everyone that the money that she made and kept was hers to give to whomever she liked.

Abigail's dying before John is a good thing because Abigail, through a strong woman, could not have taken that sort of eternal separation. She grew so tired of the separations over the years and John is able to think that he will be with his wife soon. John takes Abigail's death in a "muted" sort of way, which isn't surprising….....
