Discussion:

The issue of abortion remains very controversial and is characterized by several arguments and counter-arguments. This has led to differences in permitting and prohibiting the procedure across different societies. However, abortions should be permitted for several reasons rather than being an unrestricted procedure or practice. Women should be permitted to make private personal decisions based on their beliefs, circumstances, and values without interference from the government or any group. Therefore, people should respect and support a woman when she encounters a decision that could change her life such as whether to have a child.

Generally, the government should respect personal integrity by enabling women to make their own private decisions and ensure that they have the ability to make such decisions in a responsible manner. Secondly, abortion should be permitted in several circumstances such as when the mother's health is at risk including her mental well-being. Moreover, abortion should be allowed in situation where the pregnancy is a by-product of an offense like rape and for social reasons such as mother's inability to cope with child or poverty. This procedure should also be legal in circumstances where the child is more likely to have an unacceptable quality of life such as mental problems ("When is Abortion Legal," n.d.).


The circumstances that justify abortion revolve around unwanted pregnancies, mother's inability to cope with or raise the child, and concerns regarding the mother's health during pregnancy. Through encouraging abortion in these situations, there will be less suffering for the child, parents, and a decrease in over-population. In addition, one of the most fundamental freedoms guaranteed to women by the constitution is the right to decide on how many children they have. Therefore, permitting abortion is one of the major ways of allowing women to make such decisions without government interference. Abortion is not only an issue of private personal decisions but is part of the greater struggle for women to obtain equality.

Conclusion:

Even though there are several logical reasons and arguments against the procedure, permitting abortion in the previously discussed situations goes a long way in ensuring women obtain equality and victory in their long struggle. Women should have liberty to choose the number of children they would like to have and whether to have a child in various circumstances. However, this practice should not be unrestricted because the prevalence of murder of innocent lives without proper reasons......
