These investment vehicles are often referred to as "CD's," offer investors a very low risk option for returns. Typically the longer an investor locks his or her money up in a CD, the higher the rate of return. One of the advantages to these types of investment vehicles is that they often offer higher interest rates than checking or savings accounts. However, there are often penalties for withdrawing money early, and some CD's require customers to deposit money for years in order to earn a decent rate of return.
