Initially he busied himself with performing and publishing new research findings. Through this endeavor he expanded his knowledge of chemistry and physics. When he moved from Pennsylvania to California in 1974, he began to serve as a mentor to graduate students. While mentoring others, he himself began learning a lot more about his field of study from his academic peers.

Soon afterwards Dr. Zewail felt encouraged to apply to certain top positions at several American universities. It was during this time that he received the offer to serve as a director at CalTech. At his new position Dr. Zewail enthusiastically worked beside scientists from diverse social and cultural backgrounds. Besides serving in a leadership position to the hundreds of students and faculty members under him, Dr. Zewail not only inspired others to perform at their very best but was also himself inspired to learn and understand new advances in physics and chemistry from others.

Throughout his life Dr. Ahmed Zewail has consistently displayed the following characteristics both within his personality and through his leadership capabilities. One of his personal qualities is that while growing up in Egypt he displayed an insatiable appetite for learning and acquiring knowledge, particularly in math and science.

He loved to inquire about and investigate how everything functioned in life. Due to his inquisitiveness and knack for problem solving, Dr. Zewail was successfully able to conduct a lot of research while in college both within Egypt and the United States.

Another of his personal qualities is his steady determination to study abroad in America despite all the obstacles and setbacks he faced towards realizing this goal while still in Egypt. Yet another personal quality was his ability to quickly adapt to new surroundings, as can be seen with the way he adjusted to life in America.

His leadership qualities, which were first revealed in Egypt and continued on in America, include the ability to teach and mentor fellow students in the sciences. Through this he showed that he was capable of helping students from a diversity of backgrounds to learn and understand the scientific field of study. Along side this capability he always expressed a willingness to learn from others and expressed humility about the amount of knowledge he possessed. All these leadership and personal qualities are very admirable and can greatly influence others to….....
