I. Introduction

A. Statement of Purpose

The purpose of this document is to deconstruct the viability of deploying cloud computing within the healthcare industry. Specifically, the author is seeking to examine the utility of a cloud paradigm for rendering e-medicine services overseas. Adoption rates for cloud computing have significantly increased in the past several years (Harper, 2017). However, there are a number of factors affecting those rates of adoption in the healthcare industry. As such, this paper will examine the most relevant of those factors within a proposed use case in South Korea.

Description of the company and its industry

The company considered within this paper is a hospital in South Korea. In this regard it is a typical care facility for the health care vertical. The health care industry as a whole has had to make a number of advances in its Information Technology infrastructure and architecture over the last couple of decades. This movement was spawned in earnest after the implementation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which had several ramifications some of the most vital of these are containing records in electronic format and adhering to specific measures for the purpose of both security and privacy (ACORN, 2017).

Thus, there are a number of points of consideration for the company mentioned above and any within the healthcare vertical in terms of cloud computing. The cloud’s benefits are substantial and include a flexible, pay on demand pricing model augmented by less reliance on physical infrastructure (Harper, 2013). However, there are very definite measures organizations must follow in terms of storing and accessing data (and patient data in particular). Subsequently, it is necessary to discern what impact the various facets of e-medicine would have on those regulations as well as what impact they would have on the aforementioned hospital’s ability to achieve its primary objective—serving its patient population better.
