more diverse and more economically stratified, crime often increases. The American colonies were no different. Property thefts such as robberies and housebreakings in particular were on the rise, perhaps because certain individuals showed notably greater profits in their enterprises than other individuals, inspiring jealously and dissent between citizens of different means. There had also been an influx of immigration into many of the colonies, resulting in greater diversity. Some of the initial religious fervor that had begun some of the colonies had begun to dissipate, and there were also accounts of “Horse-Riders, Whores, and Thieves” involved in attacks in less… Continue Reading...
Iroquois tribe provided Benjamin Franklin with the notion of a democratic republic for the burgeoning American colonies. For instance, Loewen reports that, “Indeed, Native American ideas may be responsible for our democratic institutions. In the 1740s the Iroquois wearied of dealing with several often bickering English colonies and suggested the colonies form a union similar to the [Iroquois] League” (103).
Taken together, while the Native American tribes were poorly served by the United States, especially with Andrew Jackson’s notorious Indian Removal Act of 1830 and the Trail of Tears that followed, many have retained their cultures and continue to celebrate their colorful heritages in ways… Continue Reading...
to imagine its crippling horrors: “Within several decades of being brought to the American colonies, Africans were stripped of human rights and enslaved as chattel, an enslavement that lasted more than two centuries. Slave owners whipped slaves who displeased them. Clergy preached that slavery was the will of God. Scientists ‘proved’ that blacks were less evolved-a subspecies of the human race” (Ferris.edu). Once the cotton gin was invented, that solidified the necessity of slavery as a means of creating a foundation for the South’s economy. The fact that we could overcome something as awful and as critical to our economy as slavery, indicates… Continue Reading...
their religious beliefs and sought out a fresh start elsewhere. They saw the American colonies to begin anew and practice their beliefs without fear or worry (Barkan, 2013).
So many come to the United States now to escape persecution. It is interesting to see how the roots of immigration began with the same sentiments and notion. Although early waves of immigration began with Great Britain, it wasn’t until Roanoke that colonization efforts truly took hold. One of the earlier attempts at immigration, Roanoke, marked the beginning of colonization efforts. “Soon after the failed attempt to colonize Roanoke in 1585, the commercial classes and… Continue Reading...
increased rainfall according to some historians. " . . . described a change in climatic conditions in the North American colonies, and linked this favorable change to the ongoing settlement that produced increased drainage and deforestation" (Storch, 2012, p. 268). Although there is no real example of anthropogenic climate changes because of the limited data available for analysis, many do believe a good example of such effects is if the increased carbon dioxide in the earth thanks to human evolution. The increase in technology has led to a use of chemicals and machines that increase the output of greenhouse emissions. These gases could lead to and have led to… Continue Reading...
