However, one must consider the context of the petition. Given today's knowledge of Native American-colonial relations, I question whether or not the issues in the petition are hyperbolized. Were the colonists similarly torturing the Native Americans? Did they want to create a militia just to rid the area of people they saw as pests? or, were these people really harming and murdering the colonial population in this area?

Week 4: Nathaniel Bacon on Bacon's Rebellion

In today's culture, we often wonder how such blatant racism could have existed in history that Native Americans were removed and killed with such impunity during the revolutionary years.
Bacon, on Bacon's Rebellion, does an excellent job of explaining how these attitudes could have existed. Bacon begins by tying his rebellion to God and what is just, although today we may call him the unjust. Toward the end of his essay, he argues that the Native Americans are enemies of the king and the colonists. Bacon's attitude in this essay certainly suggests how the colonists could rationalize their behavior and target the Native Americans with such fervor.
