Defense Transportation System (DTS)

The DTS represents a central part of USA's overall transportation network. It involves interrelationships, procedures, and resources of a number of federal, Department of Defense (DoD), non- U.S. and commercial activities supporting DoD's transportation requirements (Jankowski, 2003, p. 13). Foreign Military Sales or FMS constitutes a critical tool in the nation's security interests and in the promotion of its foreign policy. In the past ten years, FMS contracts have been steadily growing in number. The overall yearly FMS funding rose from eight to twenty- one billion dollars, between 1997 and 2006 (Yoo, Mallicoat, & Simpson, 2009, p. 307), proving that FMS growth necessitates a better DTS, in order for other countries to be backed through their security supports. This may be achieved through best practice integration into the System.

Literature Review

The business unit "Dynamic Transportation Systems" of the Mobility Department studies traffic system optimization for allowing individual motorized traffic, cyclists, pedestrians, and public transport to get from point A to point B in a quicker, safer, and a more environment- friendly manner. Concurrently, it ensures the overall transportation system carries on working optimally. Such a consideration of every mode of traffic forms the basis of effective mobility systems. These kinds of multifaceted research problems may be dealt with using the business entity's thorough experiences in the following areas: traffic flow analysis, measurement, control, and simulation.

Information from multiple sensor sources is gathered, studied, modeled, and incorporated into elaborate simulation tools. Such an activity permits accurate forecasts with regard to capacity utilization or travel times, for guiding traffic flows and individuals in an efficient and safe manner. The goal is balancing each traffic mode's optimum with that of the overall transportation system (AIT, 2016).

Organizational responsibilities and transportation procedures relating to wartime and peacetime requirements must remain unaffected irrespective of the kind of operation performed. Enhanced intensity required for supporting operations ought not to call for a novel set of systems and procedures. Transportation procedures and processes are carried out according to DTR (Defense Transportation Regulation) 4500.9- R. Such standardization enables training of transportation forces in peacetime in the very same way they would in times of emergency or war, and offers an inherent flexibility of quickly and effectively supporting all kinds of army operation. The total transportation capability applied using DTS is, in this respect, a key enabling tool that facilitates DoD support of the President's and the Defense Secretary's strategies and objectives (DTS, 2013, p. 1).
