Social Learning Theory

Paragraph 1 (Summary of the Lessons Learnt from the Reading Material and Two Peer Reviewed Journal Articles Discussing (the Social Learning Theory) One Theory)

When we are born into the world, we simply come here not knowing how to act or behave. Throughout my readings, in the textbook, Essential Criminology, and scholarly journal articles, I have found that the social learning theory explains how humans learn to behave by observing those around them or what is in their environment. Parents, family members, teachers, friends, or any individual that is observed can be a "role model" children can imitate. There are also the television or video game characters, where behavior is observed. Children can then choose which pattern of behavior to imitate. Positively speaking, children from healthy environments that emulate positive behaviors modeled around them (e.g. kindness, love, empathy, sharing, and integrity), will have them positively reinforced for positive outcomes. On a negative note, the social learning theory states that negative behaviors (e.g. violence, swearing, stealing, abuse, and aggression) learned from individuals or the media, may produce undesirable behaviors that can lead to negative outcomes.

In order for offenders to stay out of trouble and away from criminal acts, it is important for parents to be positive role models that provide positive learning environments for their children.
"Observational learning is an important component of human learning" (Brewer & Wann, 1998). The behaviors I have observed from my parents, grandparents, teachers and church members, have mainly grounded and influenced my pattern of positive behaviors. Throughout my high school and college years, I had many opportunities to observe my peer's behaviors. Through social learning and peer pressure, I have ignored my morally correct understanding of appropriate behaviors, and engaged in inappropriate ones (e.g. underage drinking, using a fake driver's license and driving under influence of alcohol). I prioritized reinforcement and acceptance from my peer group way above the right choices I ought to have made. "Some….....
