Bellows uses a very vigorous slashing brushwork throughout this painting, this technique creates very dynamic lines which add to the surreal yet energetic nature of this painting. For Eakins, his painting used much softer lines and this is evident in the detail of the painting. By using softer lines he accomplishes his purpose of creating a very happy and uplifting picture that seems to calm and soothe rather than cause stark attention as in Bellows' painting.

A b) Both the subject within these two paintings is nude boys, for George Bellow, the painting of these kids represented a depiction of the natural body but also of the commonplace. His purpose is to show the stimulation he has received from his new environment in New York City, where he moved from Ohio. It also reveals the excitement of a new century, and the piece is meant to a celebration of energy, an almost exclamation mark. The fact that he accomplishes this spiritual intent upon a very commonplace theme of children playing by the docks reveals his genius. For Eakins, his painting shows several similarities and differences with Bellows'. Primarily Eakins shared Bellows' passion for the naked body. He uses the naked body throughout much of his paintings and. Additionally, the poem is meant to be a reflection within one of Eakins' favorite poet, Walt Whitman.

Within Whitman's Song of Myself, he writes of 28 naked bathers, and these lines inspired Eakins' painting. Therefore while Bellows intended his work to be a symbolic representation of excitement and celebration, Eakins' work is meant to be homage to a poet.
