Compare and contrast the Army Problem solving model process with the rapid decision making and synchronication process (C100)

The Army's problem solving model process is defined by both the Field Manual 22-100 Army Leadership and the Field Manual 101-5 Staff Organization and Operations (Chapter 5) as a detailed, seven-step process which is used by Army personnel to address battlefield dilemmas in the most effective and efficient manner possible. The seven step process of the Army problem solving model is as follows: 1.) Recognize and Define The Problem. 2.) Gather Facts And Make Assumptions. 3.) Define End States And Establish Criteria. 4.) Develop Possible Solutions 5.) Analyze And Compare Possible Solutions 6.) Select And Implement Solution. 7.) Analyze Solution For Effectiveness. The first step entails assessing the situation rapidly and ascertaining the problems to be addressed. The second step is to separate factual knowledge which can be proven from assumptions and beliefs which may be unfounded. The third step requires setting an attainable goal which will accelerate the solving of the problem at hand. Step four involves brainstorming and discussion to spur the development of useful ideas. The fifth step is to examine the possible solutions from all angles to determine which is the most realistic.

The sixth step is to choose a solution based on three criteria: acceptability, feasibility and suitability. The seventh and final step is to review the selected chosen solution for its effectiveness and to determine whether or not this solution should be disseminated for further use.

The rapid decision making and synchronization process (RDSP), on the other hand, is described by FM Chapter 5-40 as a long used decision making process used by the Army's command and control structure for decades. According to FM Chapter 5-40, within the confines of the RDSP, "rapid is often more important than process" and this need for quick thinking means that "much of it may be mental rather than written." In contrast to the Army problem solving model, which calls for the optimal solution to be implemented, the RDSP necessitates the timeliest and effective solution that still falls within a commander's mission parameters. The role of the RDSP within military command structure is to properly handle the fluid nature of battlefield situations by addressing them in the most rapid and effective manner available at the moment.
