The government became involved because again, working conditions and the greed of the business owners was not controlled, and many of them exploited their workers and had no thought of sanitation or safety. Legislation occurs because something needs to be changed or reformed, and that is what the legislation regarding labor and the meat packing industry was meant to do. It was meant to create better working conditions, shorter work weeks, better pay, and to provide a sanitary and safe work environment, because all of these had been missing before.

Evidence tells a story in history because it makes history come alive and seem more real to the reader. A personal letter or diary, a photograph, an article of clothing, even a newspaper, all have the ability to show what life was like, what society was like, and how people lived in earlier times. Legislation and lawmaking also helps shed light on society, because it shows what people and the government were concerned with, such as public safety, labor laws, and exploitation of the weak and poor. Without these kinds of evidence, history would not be nearly as understandable, or as interesting, and it would be much harder to get a real idea of what society and life was like in earlier times.
Photographs are especially important to this understanding, because they are the most vivid portrayals of people and events, and they were not altered, so they prove theories and ideas about life, such as the desperate poverty that many immigrants lived in. Evidence is all we have to go on when it comes to history, because that is all we have to remind us of life in earlier times, and all we have to use to understand those times......
