The Value Of Developing An Online Electronic Portfolio

Increasing rate of globalization in the current global environment characterized by stiff competition from professionals necessitate the use of modern methods of acquiring job positions in the organization. While traditional methods of seeking employment focused on submitting written application for the posts, the current methods that employ the use of electronic methods and internet have, facilitated easy selection, recruitment, and mentoring of employees. Significant evidence shows that approximately 67% of the global organizations in today employ the use electronic methods of employee recruitment and selection, as they are associated with organizational benefits such as convenience and cost effective. Significant analysis conducted by Marier (2012) revealed that most of the global institutions also employ the use of the social networks such as the Facebook and Twitter to advertise their vacancies and attract a pool of potential candidates across the world. The applicability of the approach to all candidates irrespective of their geographical location and ethnic background translate to its relevance to the current global environment. Therefore, the following analysis focuses on the discussion of the value of developing an electronic career.

An electronic career refers to a collection of individual evidences that shows their accomplishment both academically and outside school-related activities. The career portfolio consists of samples of one's work that exhibits and reveals the variety and quality of learning, skills, experiences, and accomplishments of an individual. Similarly, Daft (2013) defines electronic career as a document that provides one's detailed journey through their career development process. An electronic career of a student should provide detailed information related to their self-assessment and signify exemplary student's products, projects, and reflections. Hung-Yue and Jiann-Min, (2013) showed that electronic career portfolios are the manner in which the students can document, explore, and store their life aspirations, interest, strengths, and accomplishments. The information is stored in a manageable that is accessible to users within and outside the organization. As such, it is beyond reasonable concern that using the electronic career saves not only organizations significant costs but also increase the marketability of the candidates interested in different positions (Castrogiovanni, & Kidwell, (2010).

According to Marier (2012), electronic career provides students with a systematic way of learning as they can organize their experience, archive, and display to potential organizations in need of their services. The career also provides the teachers with the opportunities to evaluate the portfolio of their students without necessary meeting them physically. Such is possible with the use of methods ways such as the internet, zip disk, and CD-ROM among other ways. Moreover, significant evidence has that electronic career has the value of allowing individuals to review, provide feedback, and communicate with different individuals across the world in an asynchronous manner. Similarly, significant evidence shows that the electronic career provides the students with the opportunities to reflect on their accomplishment, thereby, insights into the ways they can improve their performance and eliminate the identified weaknesses (Marier, 2012).

Most professionals such as the pre-service teachers use the electronic career to display their competencies required for their certification or licensure. Apart from the above, empirical evidence shows the educational systems to use electronic career for six major functions that include documenting learning and skills, tracking their development, planning for educational programs, and evaluating their competencies. Daft (2013) concludes that organizations and individuals use electronic career to facilitate the development of individual literacy skills alongside their critical thinking, factors considered to determine the effectiveness and applicability of an electronic career. In addition, significant evidence points electronic career to have the value of fostering autonomous and independent way of thinking between and among individuals. Such is possible as it allows people to concentrate on their collective responsibilities and identify the ways of portraying them.
