Reflection Essay -- Interest groups have a significant amount of control over the political system in the U.S. today. By virtue of spending and connections, interest groups are often able to have their voices heard. Politicians are inevitably going to be faced with a number of such voices, and need to take the time to evaluate the interest that a group has in any issue. At times, the ability of interest groups to have their voices heard implies that they have disproportionate power in government.

I feel that the role of the politician is to be critical about interest groups and their messages. If a group has a stake in that issue, I feel that elected officials need to understand what that stake is, and the degree to which the interest group is supported by the general population.
Indeed, it is the general population that does not have an interest group, and therefore sometimes seems to have very little voice in government.

There is a demonstrable need for interest groups -- if groups do not have a means to express their situation and how something like Prop 19 would affect them, they are powerless in government. It is worth considering, however, that citizens elect government officials, not companies or trade groups. As such, perhaps it makes more sense that citizens have the interest groups, giving them more voice and taking some voice away from groups that do not elect officials and have the ability to amplify their view, no matter how minority that view might be.
