The benefits of staffing Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ARNP) as ARNP Case Managers

A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse educated and certified to operate autonomously and collaboratively in an advanced and comprehensive medical responsibility. The practitioner has several additional roles under which they are to conduct diagnostic investigations, prescribe medications and undertake referrals to specialist clinical medications. Research suggests that when nurses undertake prescription roles, it can result to increased efficiency, maximization of resources, and improve patient access to medicines and enable nurses to provide timely and extensive care packages (Cashin, Buckley, Newman & Dunn, 2009). In the advanced practitioner context, the roles that exist include the Clinical Nurse Specialist, the Certified Nurse Midwife, the Nurse Anesthetist and the Nurse Practitioner.

On the other hand, an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) is also a registered nurse who possesses professional knowledge base, intricate decision-making skills and clinical capabilities for extensive practice, the attributes shaped by the context or by the country where they have credentials to work. ARPNs have gone through University to Masters or Doctoral education levels, meaning they have the experience, which may contribute to the accomplishment and provision of improved quality care. In addition, the ARPNs can take on responsibilities attributed to physicians including clinical assessment, diagnosis and subsequent treatment. Some of the expanded roles in healthcare include roles, which nurses take to lead in initiatives or those that arise due to the dynamic nature of nursing practice.

Leadership is among the extended nursing roles, which hospitals can offer ARPNs. In relation to the various nursing practice objectives, such as improving the quality of services, nurses who become managers can efficiently help in realizing. Primarily, this is because of the skill they have gained as nurses; therefore, becoming leaders, they will play an important role in shaping the nursing profession to be responsive. The ARPNs as case managers will facilitate enhance and support the integration of nursing roles in organizations. In addition, ARPNs as case managers, they already identify the challenges related to allocation of roles, managing relationships in the nursing practice and challenges faced by nurses in their practice (Carter et al., 2010). For this paper, the main aim is to identify the importance of hiring ARPN as Case managers in relation to LOS, improved care, improved patient satisfaction and others reflected on the research questions.

Statement of the problem

Owing to the definition used in this proposal, ARPNs have undergone university education to Master or doctoral levels. These professionals have exceptional knowledge base, decision-making proficiencies and clinically competent for extended practice. In addition, they have experience in handling the numerous activities, which take place in a hospital setting. Even though this is the case, most hospitals find it hard hiring ARPNS as ARPN Case Managers. In numerous studies, it is apparent that the practitioner's efforts play a significant role in the improved quality care, reduced LOS, increased morning discharges, improved staff and patient satisfaction and take part in the discharge planning process. Nevertheless, these activities, which the nurse takes part in their rank, would happen fast and efficiently if the nurse were a case manager. Therefore, this proposal's primary objective is to show that hiring ARPNs as Case Managers will lead to positive change in the nursing activities.

Research Questions

The following research questions will serve as a guideline in this proposal to develop or provide a framework for the subsequent study. This proposal aims to reveal the significance of hiring Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners as ARNP Case Managers. Therefore, the proposal will show why using an ARNP, as Case Manager will:

1) Will decrease hospital of stay (LOS) on a general medical unit

2) Increase the percentage of early morning discharges from the hospital

3) Improve quality of patient care.

4) Improve staff and patient satisfaction.

5) How the physicians, ARNP, and other staff members collaborate to make the process of discharging possible.

Literature review

Nurses spend most of their time with patients, checking on them by taking temperatures and many other nursing activities. They play an important role in the recovery process of the patients. When they identify with the emotional needs of their patient, they assist them to recover and improve quality.
