Pierre Bourdieu's theory of habitus and field provides a complex structural relationship between individuals and society. The concept of habitus refers to the series of values, dispositions, and attitudes that a person comes to take on as a consequence of the experiences that he or she goes through across his or her life. A field regards the greater environment involving agents and the social positions defining them. An individual's position is the sum of several concepts within the respective person's life, such as the legislations present in the field, the agent's life experiences, and his or her capital. Bourdieu's theory of habitus and field provides an intriguing view concerning how a person's life experiences play an important role in determining the attitudes the respective individual is going to take on in a field within the social order.

A person's understanding of the environment he or she inhabits largely depends on experiences that shaped the respective individual's thinking in the past. The field virtually provides a complex explanation of the dialectical connection between the habitus and the environment in which it is present. The habitus is not an independent concept, as it is largely influenced by historical elements and a person's memory.
