In New York City, where both of these cases started, public officials responded by spending more than $100 million in federal education funds provided by Title I to lease vans to park on the public streets in order to establish mobile classrooms. These mobile classrooms served more than twenty thousand students a year and required parochial school students and public school teachers to leave their classrooms and meet on seemingly neutral ground (U.S. Supreme Court: Agostini v. Felton, 2009).

Historically laws in this country tend to change over time. This is a perfect example of how a way of thinking by the Supreme Court in a case in 1985 was rethought and overturned just twelve short years later. As time passes, the way that things are thought about and ruled upon changes as well. In this instance the idea of the separation of church and state had been established for a long time. There had over time been many Courts that had looked at this issue and had all come to the same conclusion that was set forth in Aguilar v. Felton, 473 U.S.

402 (1985). The Court established that anything that mixed church and state was a violation of the constitution and was thus illegal.

This way of thinking changed though in the 1997 in the case of Agostini v. Felton, 521 U.S. 203 (1997), in this ruling the Court renounced the view that all government aid directed to the educational function of religious schools is unconstitutional. They established that public money could be made available to all students for secular purposes without violating the Establishment Clause of the Constitution. They also decided that it was entirely possible for on premise programs conducted by public school teachers to be free of any religious connection. This decision brought about a new way of thinking about religion and education and the whole idea of the separation of church and state and once again established a new line of thinking that they Court will follow until the next time that the issue is reviewed......
