Bells dismissed the 1960s counterculture as merely children at play. He felt that it was an attempt to blur the line between fantasy and reality, a type of escapism for the misfits. However, the counterculture gave rise to creativity that sparked the ideas that drove capitalism to new heights. The children of the 1960s counter culture gave rise to personal computers and Ben & Jerry's ice cream. The counterculture played an important role in the development of new products and technologies that were the driving force behind the growth of capitalism.

Bells' work comes across as a doomsday prediction of things to come. Bell wrote in tumultuous times. America had recently seen Watergate, and the Vietnam wars. Bells' dismissal of the counterculture echoed the predominant attitude of many conservative Americans of the time, it is easy to dismiss Bells' theories and predictions as fantasy, but when one begins to look around at today's world it is easy to spot examples that appear to be the fulfillment of this vision.

Bell's work is a direct reflection of the changing society in which Bell lived. He attempted to explain the chaos around him and give some insight as to where it might all lead. Bell can be accused of generalization, but one can find examples that support his claims in modern society. Bell was ahead of his time, as far as predictions are concerned. Bells' success in prediction stems from a solid basis in theory. Bell's work demonstrates how sound theory can lead to support of the argument even though it is easy to dismiss at first glance.
