Some commonly used career aptitude tests include the ACT's (formerly American College Testing) EXPLORE testing regimen that examines 8th and 9th grade students' career aptitude using a battery of tests that provide a range of potential occupational choices. According to ACT's promotional material for the EXPLORE test, "This information can help you learn more about careers, clarify your goals, and begin to plan your future -- including your high school courses and, perhaps, a college education" (Your future, 2010, para. 2). Likewise, the EXPLORE handbook for 2009-2010 states, "With thousands of occupations in the work world, where do you begin? Your EXPLORE Score Report helps you start by focusing on a few Career Areas (groups of similar occupations)" (p. 7). Students completing the EXPLORE career aptitude test receive a composite score in four core subject areas (English, mathematics, reading and science) that are used to provide them with guidance concerning their college readiness level, what college courses are needed to pursue a particular career path, as well as information concerning what students can do to build on their strengths and address any weaknesses that were identified in the EXPLORE test in pursuit of a given career field.

The research showed that aptitude tests are commonly used by educators to help assess the learning readiness of students. The research also showed that educators and employers alike can use career aptitude tests to help identify what career fields are most congruent with an individual's innate abilities and personal preferences. One of the criticisms that was directed at some career aptitude tests, though, was an inability to keep pace with a rapidly changing job market, an issue that is particularly important in the Age of Information where new career fields are being introduced every day and an individual's true potential in these fields may be overlooked in favor of an outdated and declining career field. In the final analysis, career aptitude tests can help individuals learn more about themselves as well as what career fields are available that might be good fits with their abilities and desires, but they should not be regarded as the end-all authority in formulating career assignments for anyone......
