Career Progression in Environmental and Social Sustainability

Environmental and social sustainability is a relatively new field that has numerous opportunities for professional growth and career progression. These opportunities are attributable to the fact that this field has diverse areas of competence including humanities, science, and social sciences. However, similar to nearly every other profession, career progression in environmental and social sustainability begins from junior to senior levels. This process of career progression is largely common among internal practitioners in this field who handle various environmental protection, economic development, and social sustainability issues on a daily basis.

Upon graduation from college, the entry level in the field of environmental and social sustainability is junior level. This level involves transitioning from the learning environment to real world situations based on knowledge and skills obtained from relevant courses. During this stage, the internal practitioner basically focuses on translating knowledge into real world application. The academic requirement for an individual to work at the junior level in this field is a degree in environmental and social sustainability or related courses as well as any other relevant training. An individual may work as a junior for a period of at least 2 years and handle various job assignments like carrying out research, preparing sustainability reports, implementing environmental and social sustainability standards, and execute sustainable development strategies and programs (Knowles, 2014).
