Problem Statements and Drafts of Goals

Rachel's working hours are taking a toll on her. She is not able to get home in time to check up on the progress of her children. Her work pays poorly at $11 per hour and this does not allow her to have health insurance as the premiums are costly for her. Goal: Obtain greater pay.

Calvin's mannerisms and conducts are worrying. He seems to be losing interest in school yet he is in the 8th grade. There is concern that he might follow the same actions that were undertaken by his older sister Alyssa who dropped out of school at the age of 16 years. Calvin is also involved with bad friends who use foul language. In addition, his last report from school indicated that he was failing. Owing to Rachel's busy schedule, she has not obtained information on his progress from school. Goal: Take more time to assess Calvin's behavior and progress.

Alyssa is 12 weeks pregnant. The main concern is that she will not be able to take care of the infant with such minimal pay. Her boyfriend, Bobby, seems to be cheating on her and due to the baby, she will be forced to move out. Goal: Provide advice to Alyssa on what she needs to do.

4. Rachel and her children live in a 2-bedroom duplex. She is forced to sleep on the couch. This becomes more of a problem when James is around as there is no privacy and there is less space. In addition, James is not included in the lease and having him runs the risk of being kicked out. In addition, James jumps from job to job, has not kept a steady job for a while and at times is jobless. He is not reliable for childcare or even being a full-time parent. Goal: Make decision on whether to be with James or not.

5. Rachel wishes to obtain a degree, perhaps in Criminal Justice or Education. The key problem is that owing to the minimal pay from her job and her responsibilities of taking care of her children, she is unable to afford paying for the program by herself. Goal: Find a grant or scholarship and register for a degree.

Objective: Look for a different better job. Taking into consideration that the present job is only paying $11 per hour and that in three years she only got a wage increase of 50 cents, there is need for Rachel to make an application for a new job. She should seek different opportunities.

Objective: Apply for the different jobs. Once Rachel seeks out different work prospects, she should make such applications. In particular, Rachel has been working for three years now, and this implies that she has already earned invaluable work experience.

Goal: Take more time to assess Calvin's behavior and progress.

Objective: Counsel Calvin on his friends and behavior. It is important to have a sit-down with Calvin about his behavior and his friends. It is necessary for Calvin to change his behavior. This will also include pointing out the importance of staying in school.

Deadline: 1 month

Responsible Person: Rachel

Objective: Visit the school to determine how Calvin is fairing on his studies. It is necessary to discuss with teachers on how Calvin is progressing in school and his grades.

Objective: Find initiatives to help Calvin with his school grades. This can include extra tutoring.

Goal: Provide advice to Alyssa on what she needs to do.
