Cashews (also known as Maranon) are fruits from the cashew tree and originate in tropical America. It is easy to confuse the actual cashew fruit as a result of its appearance, as it has a peduncle uniting it to the tree. Some people experience trouble eating this fruit because they either believe that they should eat the peduncle or that they can eat the fruit itself without roasting it first. Trying to bite on the shell results in a very bitter taste and the fruit is actually poisonous in its raw version (Blake, 2009, p. 105). The peduncle is similar to a paprika while the nut is smaller, tough, and it is positioned outside of the paprika-like peduncle.

The peduncle separating the seed from the tree can be dried and it tastes like a combination between a prune and a fig. Its color varies and it can be either red, yellow, or orange.
