Communication and Management Research Guide: Communication between Supervisor and SubordinateIt is important for a supervisor to be able to effectively communicate with their subordinates in order to maintain a productive work environment. Unfortunately, there can often be a disconnect between supervisors and subordinates, which can lead to misunderstandings and missed opportunities. This problem is compounded by the fact that many supervisors are reluctant to give feedback for fear of coming across as negative or critical (Gardner & Jones, 1999). Additionally, subordinates may be unwilling to give feedback to superiors for fear of reprisal if the feedback is critical (Milliken et al., 2003). As a result, subordinates may not receive the guidance they need to improve their performance, and superiors may be oblivious to how they are actually coming across to subordinates. This can create a vicious cycle in which the quality of work suffers and morale declines. By taking the time to build strong communication channels, supervisors can help to address this problem and create a more positive work environment.Poor communication between a supervisor and subordinate can lead to a number of problems. For one, it can create a feeling of mistrust and resentment. If a subordinate feels like they are not being kept in the loop, they may start to question the decisions that are being made. This can lead to conflict and ultimately, a breakdown in the working relationship. Additionally, poor communication can lead to a loss of productivity. If subordinates are unsure of what is expected of them, they may end up working on tasks that are not a priority. This can lead to missed deadlines and frustration on both sides (Dai et al., 2022). Finally, poor communication can have a negative impact on the morale of all employees.
