After watching the podcasts, I learned a lot about Wilberforce. I was surprised to learn that it was named after the British abolitionist William Wilberforce and that it boasted the accomplishment of having the first African-American university president in the entire country. This really cements the Wilberforce area in African-American history and marks it is a seriously significant spot. Watching the podcasts made me realize how many stories there are here at Central State University. I loved seeing the old photographs and the transformation in styles of dress of the students.

The message of the Introductory podcast was that Wilberforce is a place where African-Americans were given the opportunity to learn at the college level.

The Carnegie Library podcast told how Central State’s library is one of the libraries donated by Andrew Carnegie to communities around the country in the 19th century. What an honor for the college to still have this!

The Cemetery podcast tells the story of Benjamin W. Arnett, who helped do a lot for the Wilberforce community, drawing up contracts and securing rights for the African-Americans.

His is the most prominent statue in the cemetery.

The Emery Hall podcast tells the story of the building of Emery Hall for the African-American female students, who wanted an education. This was another inspiring podcast.

The Fountain podcast tells the story of the significance of the Fountain at Wilberforce, how it was fed by a natural spring, how it provided relief and enjoyment for the community and how young men would take their ladies pitchers of the cool water as a gift. What a neat story—and what a simpler time!

Watching these podcasts just makes me wonder how we lost such gentility and refinement so quickly! There is still a lot more history to learn, but from looking at where we are now to where we were then, I can’t help but wonder how things have changed.
