What many medical professionals did not know, though, is what the frequency of the population who were allergic to both penicillin and cephalosporin.

The importance of the study on review is that as late as the early 21st century, there was no statistical frequency analysis for the Cephalosporins. To remedy this, the study tested 128 patients using a skin sensitivity method, and found that 14, or about 12% of the tested population, showed signs of sensitivity. Unfortunately, 22 patients declined testing, and only a single test was made in the rest of the test population. In many cases, individuals are able to tolerate penicillin in initial, and sometimes even secondary and tertiary doses.

Therefore, while the study does indicate that: a) almost 10% of patients with documented sensitivities to penicillin also had sensitivity to cephalosporin, and b) additional work must be done to find the initial loading dose level that might cause allergic reactions.
