Due to this, there are more babies that are carried to term, and more premature infants are able to survive the problems that they are often faced with. Since this is the case, the incidence of IVH, which was as high as 50% in 1977, has come down to between 8-56%. Most nurseries have reported rates of 20-30%.

While the incidence has decreased, the severity has also decreased due to modern technology and its ability to diagnose and treat problems more efficiently than in the past. In 1986 the severity rate (grade 3 or 4) was 70%. By 1995, the rate of severity in grades three and four had come down to 23%. The mortality rate also went down during that time period by approximately 30%, which was very encouraging to those that have premature babies and those that care for these tiny infants as well. There really is no treatment for IVH, as it is something that occurs spontaneously and often cannot be stopped. The best way to help avoid the issue is to ensure that the baby is carried as close to term as possible, in order to reduce the risk of IVH and other risks that are more severe when it comes to premature babies.....
