Cesar Vallejo's Poetry

"The Eternal Die" is a meditation and conversation about many grave subjects. The narrator of the poem seems to be shouting aloud in some kind monologue or rant, but at the same time, seems to be engaged with a debate with the God the narrator identifies with. There are clues that the God is the Catholic God, or at least the Christian God. There are many statements that are thrown fiercely at the God in question. The narrator is clearly suffering from an existential crisis and is having little luck in finding solace or answers in traditional forms of religion. This poem could very well be a stab at organized religion, in its lack of efficacy to relate to real world problems and everyday experience.

Everyday experience is another point or theme in this poem. The narrator accuses God of not knowing how to deal with the reality of the world at the time. The narrator accuses religion of making up quite a few lies about Christ, as well as many of the key Christian mythological narratives regarding the nature of man, the nature of God, and the nature of life.
