Chiang imposed martial law on Taiwan and only after his 1975 death did his son and successor Chiang Ching-kuo eventually lifted these restrictions. It was left up to Chiang's son to create a democracy upon the soil where his father only succeeded in creating a military dictatorship. And relations between Mainland China and the island of Taiwan remain controversial and fraught even today, the legacy of this man who wished to represent his nation, but ultimately only ended in representing himself and his own military ambitions.
