Personal Learning Experience: How to Find a Scholarly Journal Article

Find a reputable database such as EBSCO or Google Scholar. Remember that simply Googling results is not the best or most efficient way to find a scholarly, peer-reviewed article.

Using the database, type in the necessary key words and also include any limitations. One of the advantages of using EBSCO is that it allows the user to limit findings to peer-reviewed sources only, as well as by the year published, type of source, etcetera.

After filtering the results, select a suitable article that fits the parameters that you need. As well as filtering, other clues that an article is peer-reviewed include the fact that it is from a journal, that it is published by a professional association or university, that it has a volume number, and that the authors have academic credentials.

Step 4: To write the citation, put the last name of the author or authors first, followed by a column and the first initial of the author's first name like this:

Last name, First Initial.

Include any co-authors with a comma followed by an ampersand. If there are more than seven authors, include an ellipses after the sixth name and end with the final, seventh name.

Step 5: Follow the first name and initial with the date of publication in parentheses.

Step 7. Follow with the title of the article. Capitalize only the first name of the article title and the first letter of the first word after a colon.

Step 8. Follow the title of the article with the journal name. The journal name should be complete, without abbreviations, and every major word should be capitalized.

Step 9: Follow the title of the journal with a comma and the volume number of the journal (and the issue number in parentheses), followed by the page range of the article with a period at the end. If the journal has a doi, include that as well after the page range.

Step 10: An example citation would look like this

Last name, First initial. (Date of Publication). Title of article. Journal Name, Volume Number (Issue Number), Page Range. doi number.

Note: If you retrieve a scholarly journal that is available on the web, include the words "retrieved from," followed by the web link as follows

Last name, First initial. (Date of Publication). Title of article. Journal Name, Volume Number (Issue….....
