Boyz n the Hood and CluelessOne of the most popular genres of movies in the 1990s was the teenage coming-of-age story. Two films that exemplify this genre are Boyz n the Hood and Clueless. Although they are set in very different worlds, the two movies share some common themes. Both films deal with the challenges of growing up in a challenging environment and the importance of making good decisions. However, the two movies also have some significant differences. Boyz n the Hood is set in an inner-city neighborhood plagued by crime and poverty, while Clueless takes place in a wealthy suburban community. Boyz n the Hood is a violent, gritty, drama with very adult themes and shocking sequences. Clueless is a light-hearted comedy with a satirical bent. Yet, both films ring very true for all kinds of filmgoers, who see in each story something with which they can identify. Indeed, each is about a young person coming to some greater knowledge—and for that reason, they are both similar. However, they are very different in terms of how that coming-of-age drama plays out. As a result, the characters in each film face very different obstacles and challenges, and have very different cinematic tones and qualities.
