Community service

One of the best experiences that one gets in the process of learning, particularly outside the class is the issue of community service. It is at such attachments that an individual learns the things that he would not have learnt in class in a better manner than in the community. Spending time with the community and experiencing what they undergo on a daily basis opened up my eyes to the future and the contemporary challenges that the community has.

The community that I was attached to was predominantly low income families of Hispanics and the dominant social issues that I detected were bullying and the binge drinking. These are social problems that are seen to transcend from school to the community and the community has accepted them as normal and a daily happening yet they affect the children and the youth in this community.

The rate at which the bullying and binge drinking takes place within this community is much higher than the community where I come from. In as much as there are instances of binge drinking in my hometown and neighborhood, it is much restricted to weekends and not rampant everywhere. This is in stark contrast to the community where I was attached where it takes place throughout the week. The bullying instances are also not heard of commonly in my hometown yet in this community it happened on very frequent basis.

When I her the word "community" what comes to mind is the reference to a group of people who share the same concepts of social coexistence, they share values and also share traditions that may have a long historical background or may span a few year back. They may occupy close or distant geographical locations but share these above in common. The word "Service" brings to mind the sacrifice that one takes to go and fulfill the physical or spiritual needs that another individual may be having. It involves time and energy spent with no personal gain expected at the end of the sacrifice.

The community service opened my eyes to challenges that average people like me face in their daily lives and also to the challenges that are easily overlooked in the community like bullying yet have a great impact in the society. This will mean that I have a better focus on the areas of my study and research in my college life in order to try and….....
