Art is a means of expression. Both the works of the Horse Fair and the City Rises provide a beautiful landscape amidst busy, dynamic subjects. While they are opposites in terms of style, they share some similarities. These works of art are what helped make the artists famous. They are some of their best pieces.

Created by Rosa Bonheur, The Horse Fair is an oil on canvas painting that is Bonheur's most famous work. She started painting the piece in 1852 with a reveal in 1853. Illustrating the hose market held in the beautiful city of Paris, the background includes the tree-lined Boulevard de l'Hopital, adjacent to the asylum named Salpetriere. A viewer can spot the asylum in the left background.

The process to finish the project was a long one. Bonheur spent over 18 months just sketching, twice a week, at the asylum so felt she had to include it in order to provide some additional meaning to the painting. While she was there, she would dress as a man to avoid anyone paying attention to her. Famous for being an animal painter, she received great praise when the painting was unveiled in 1853. Drawing inspiration from George stubs, Eugene Delacris, Theodore Gericault, as well as ancient Greek sculpture, the piece was the artist's own 'Pathenon frieze'.

With the Metropolitan Museum declaring The Horse Fair as one of its best and well-known works of art, it provided the artist as much acclaim as Umberto Boccioni.

Umberto Boccioni's The City Rises is the first example of futurism in painting. Inspired by the poet Fillip Tommaso Marinetti's Manifesto of Futurism back in 1909, Boccioni decided to take part in this movement and began doing so with The City Rises.

Futurist painters like Boccioni were interest in the energy of urban environments and the technological process. Their subjects often included a utopian dream of Italy and its transformation into a modern nation. What many of these paintings had in common and what can be seen in The City Rises are hard work, surging crowds, and dynamic machines. Construction of an electric power plant with horses running amok and people desperately trying to control them, Boccioni celebrate the masculine proletariat.

Like Bonheur who had horses be one of the central themes and images in her piece, Boccioni used horses as a main focus, drawing people in through their dynamic movement. Unlike Boccioni however, Bonheur's painting is of a tranquil setting where although the horses are acting up, the humans have control over them with nothing getting too out of hand. Here there is manageable chaos whereas in Boccioni's painting, the chaos becomes uncontrollable and drives the people handling the horses at extreme angles.
