VA Ambulatory Care

When it comes to the job and duty of the Veteran Affairs (VA) Administration, there are many forms and types of care that commonly come up and that are discussed or debated. Just one of those, and perhaps one of the less commonly mentioned ones, is that of ambulatory care. However, it is a very important topic and it is an integrated and vital part of the healthcare chain, both when it comes to veterans and non-veterans. This report shall briefly summarize what the VA has to say about the subject. There will then be an evidence-based approach that looks at the issue, there will be a discussion about how the author of this brief report feels about the material offered and how the rest of the medical world might align (or not align) with what is described on the site. While there are many people that degrade and insult the work of the VA, there are indeed many things that they do very well for the veterans that they serve.

Summary & Analysis

To be clear, ambulatory care is a fancier way of referring to care that is done on an outpatient basis. In the context of the VA and what they do for the current and ex-service members that they care for, this would be care that can be handled via a doctor's visit and then the patient is sent on their way. The way in which the VA provides this care to its patients is commonly referred to as Primary Care Services, or PCS. The stated goals and mission of the PCS unit is to provide care on an ongoing and immediate basis.

There is also heavy integration with (or internal construction of) programs like the Primary Care-Mental Health Integration framework for such as veterans with PTSD and Post-Deployment Integrated Care (PDIC).
