There are many reasons for this. First off, competition in the pharmaceutical industry is intense, and companies must continually innovate and develop new drugs to stay ahead of the curve (Olasiuk). This was seen recently in 2020 as companies tried to be the first to market with a COVID vaccine. To compete in this industry, moreover, it requires significant investment in research and development, clinical trials, and regulatory approvals, all of which can be expensive and time-consuming. The competition is also driven by the need to lower costs and improve patient outcomes, which puts pressure on companies to develop more effective and affordable treatments. Overall, the competition in the industry drives innovation and ensures that patients have access to high-quality, affordable treatments.Secondly, the potential for new entrants is significant in the pharmaceutical industry, as advances in technology and biotechnology have made it easier for smaller companies to develop new drugs and therapies (Leeuw et al.). This poses a threat to established companies that may struggle to keep up with new innovations and technology. The potential for new entrants also creates competition, which can drive innovation and reduce costs.
