World Cup: Competitive Advantage of Entrepreneurship and SMEs in Qatar (Technology and Food Sectors) Alignment with Research Priorities The following priority subjects are covered by Qatar University’s research roadmap; (i) Population, Wellness and Health, (ii) Environment, Energy and Resource Sustainability, (iii) Identity and Social Change and (iv) ICT (Information, Communication and Technologies) (Qatar University 2013). This proposed research aims at ascertaining how the FIFA World Cup of 2022 has increased Qatari entrepreneurs’ competitive edge, with particular emphasis on medium- and small- sized (or SME) enterprises within the food and technology sectors. This event is linked to numerous social transformations which impact multiple community aspects. One area is host cities’ businesses, with the technology and food sectors featuring among the most highly engaged domains. Research may contribute to gaining insights into business repositioning to make the most of the event’s windfall advantages. This is consistent with Qatar University’s identity and social change research topic. Additionally, this study will facilitate university research capability enrichment, considering all the above research topics and fields of study are interdisciplinary. However, there is a need to promote collaboration between research scholars from diverse research centers and colleges. Collaborative studies in the following ICT areas – Secure and Intelligent Information Processing; Enabling Technologies; and E-services and Distributed Systems – will examine intelligent data collection, storage, conversion, analysis and processing methods for translating information into knowledge, besides creating practical scientific and engineering solutions, among others (Qatar University 2013). Lastly, the study will help address a few national, international and regional issues linked, particularly, to employment, resource utilization and infrastructure development. Mega events like the World Cup are highly advantageous to all nations, accelerating infrastructure project approval. Qatar must make investments in roads, airports, entry ports, broadcast technology, train stations, and security and safety (Qatar University 2013). Residents of the nation will continue to derive benefits from these investments for several years after the World Cup. Further, citizens, particularly food-sector businesses, will experience business boosts owing to the heavy visitor traffic; hence, the country will be able to effectively deal with national, international and regional infrastructure growth and unemployment issues. Research plan and expected outcomes a. Background or Literature Survey Being the host country doesn’t appear to have any major economic and financial advantages. But Matheson (2009) notes that while researches on the Germany-hosted 2006 FIFA World Cup reveal insignificant employment or income improvements, residents reported significant improvements in their happiness level, in spite of the country failing to grab the Cup. In simple words, Germany didn’t end up richer, but seemed to end up happier, than before. Particularly for developing nations, the issue of the value and opportunity cost associated with devoting the scant public capital to venues that have marginal utility after event completion may be raised. Such nations require much greater countrywide infrastructure investments to meet World Cup requirements. Moreover, they report higher cost of capital as compared to richer nations (Gordon & Barbosa 2014).

Finally, their money may be better expended on other infrastructural areas besides roads and football stadiums. The Institute of Applied Economic Research claims that small enterprises in Brazil accounted for four out of ten new jobs. Thus, hosting the event wouldn’t prove beneficial only to large multinational and domestic companies; middle class entrepreneurs would also greatly benefit from it (Gordon & Barbosa 2014). In spite of the massive success South Africa enjoyed as host country in 2010, small local entrepreneurs claimed their firms were triflingly impacted, because of governmental support of FIFA policies. The pre-World Cup SME Survey revealed 86 percent of small entrepreneurs ‘expected’ general business boosts, with 45 percent ‘hoping…
