The primary types of computer-controlled laser eye surgeries are PRK and LASIK. Both reshape the corneal area of the eye to allow light to better focus on the retina, resulting in clearer vision for the patient. Yet, it is only through the use of computer technology that this can be achieved. The lasers used in these procedures remove infinitesimal amounts of tissue, approximately 1/500th the width of a human hair. They also operate at very high speeds. In addition, it is only through the use of computers that the cornea anomalies in each patient can be accounted for and corrected, resulting in an increased rate of success, with the surgeries. The most important concept taken from this information is that the human hand and reflexes could not give the precision necessary to make this tissue removal. Therefore, the procedures could not be performed without the use of computer technology, let alone performed with the success thanks to the University of Rochester's new software.

I learned that there is eye surgery that is still performed by the surgeon's own hand and a knife -- radial keratotomy. However, this procedure is only suitable for lesser degrees of astigmatism and myopia. For greater degrees of these conditions and for hyperopia, computer-controlled laser surgery is the only solution. I think that with the use of computer technology for laser eye surgery, we will continue to see advancements in restoring people's vision, for the mentioned disorders and beyond, perhaps even someday being able to restore vision in those who are blind. Improvements in the field of laser eye surgery have occurred thanks to advancements in computing technology. New hardware and software development specifically designed for this field, and made possible by general advancements in computing, are what has made laser eye surgery possible. For tens of millions of people in America alone, this has resulted in the ability to see clearly without the use of corrective lenses.
