It is also possible that this issue with the stomach means that the baby developed the hernia at an earlier gestational age and therefore there has been more time for pulmonary hypoplasia to take place, further reducing the infant's chances for survival. Congenital diaphragmatic hernia also has some recurrence risk for future siblings, but it is only around 2%. In general, CDH is not something that is seen to run in the family and only does so in very rare cases. There are also other syndrome and conditions that are associated with CDH including De Lange syndrome and Fryns syndrome. In addition to this, there are malformations of the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary systems that can be related to CDH (www.emedicine.com,2004).

In clinical presentation, respiratory distress is usually quite obvious, and the abdomen is generally scaphoid, since most of its content are in the chest instead. The Bochdalek hernia or CDH is posterolateral in location and is up to five time more common on the left side than it is on the right side. This is generally thought to be due to the presence of the liver on the right side. How large the hernia is, as well as what developmental stage it occurred at, strongly relate to what degree of ipsilateral pulmonary hypoplasia is seen and how much the pulmonary growth has been interrupted.

In cases where there are very large hernias, pulmonary hypertension, persistent fetal circulation, and contralateral pulmonary hypoplasia are also often seen. When surgery is performed, it is easy to note the distinctly abnormal openings that occur in the diaphragm. Surgery is the only way that CDH can be corrected, as there are no medications or therapies that can relocate the organs to their proper places and seal the hole in the diaphragm. Once this is done, however, the baby should recover and live a normal life, provided the lungs develop normally and respiratory distress is alleviated (www.vh.org,2004).
