For example, criminologists often reiterate the point that lack of discipline is directly linked to criminal activity, especially among adolescents and young adults. In other words, a failure to provide discipline and guidance and to develop a sense of morality in the children can lead to extremely serious consequences later in life and even arrest. In this light we can also refer to the high rate of drug and alcohol abuse among young children, which is very often associated with an undisciplined home and environment.

The psychological consequences of a lack of discipline in the home and school can range from insecurity and learning disorders to severe depression. Another issue that has been linked to an upbringing that lacks direction and parental guidance is an inability to have meaningful relationships with others later in life. In essence, the child never learns foundational aspects such as respect and caring for others, which can affect marital and other relationships.

Another consideration is the breakdown of the parent -- child relationship. A loss of respect for the parents can lead in the long-term to a breakdown of the order and structure of the family. If laws are instituted that breakdown the normal relationship between parent and child and create undisciplined children, then this can further endanger the future of the family in our society.
