Contemporary Issues in Education

Afghan Girls, Back in the Shadows

The article presents a situational description of the dangers facing schools, its teacher and students in Afghanistan. The article describes how learning in Afghanistan has been hampered by an up rise in insurgents. The remedial measures by government and non-governmental organizations encouraging education in the region are also highlighted. It is observed that there have been remarkable advances in number of pupils enrolled in public schools. The number off attacks to schools have also been seen to be high an aspect that is blamed on the extremist Islamic movement against education of girls. There is a demonstrated eagerness among the Afghanis appearing eager to embrace education.

In the rural areas, it is a concern that education of the girl child is a controversial aspect. The controversy comes from the observed custom that girls at the age of puberty are not supposed to mix with the boys. This conflict is resolved by creating unique schools for girls. The idea has been welcomed in the Northern Provinces more since there are minimal threats from the Talibans. The efforts made in building schools are followed up by efforts to talk to the parents to feel encouraged to bring their girl children to school. To further complement the efforts made in building school, private home schools have been opted. The attacks in the recent past have not only targeted girl child but, also the boy schools have been attacked. These attacks have been seen to wreak havoc in the country's education prospects and the country will remain backward "falling farther behind." There are other ideologies that the attacks carried out in home schools are not necessarily from the insurgents but, likely be a result of the rivalry for contracts. The threat put across to the villager and the school teachers by the Taliban also work to slow down the efforts of the country to embrace education. The attacks are seen as an outright display of might by the insurgent has led to discourage students from going to school.

Quotation

"If our people do not get educated, it will be a disaster for our country,"

It is a concern of the writer that since war erupted in Afghanistan; the country has lost considerably in terms of advancing in level footing with other countries. In the world around, there have been significant breakthroughs in development achieved through education. Afghanistan has not been able to achieve these kinds of developments through education. Failure to harness the benefits of education is touted to further diminish a country's worth. Education to the people is expected to; liberate the people governing and those being governed to lead a country to prosperity (Burde, 2004). Without education, the country is bound to remain stagnated in its present situation unable to interact with other countries or even put available resource to meaningful use.

The failure to harness education in the country will affect the country leadership and its potential to grow and participate in the globalization era. Children education will open avenues for the Afghan population and the country itself to come up with home grown solution to their problems. Failure to educate the children will mean that, the country will be dependent on the few elite who are likely to seek their selfish ends, as opposed to those of the country. The much needed cohesiveness in national issues will be lacking further setting the country back compared to their other countries that are farther ahead (Burde, 2004).

Disaster is imminent given that too much effort is put to set up schools and provide education to the children in the country. Continued destruction of schools and killing of student and teachers will demoralize those putting efforts to bring development in the country. Suffice to say, failure by the Afghanistan's population to embrace education oriented development will also compromise on any other infrastructural developments.

Education and politics in Afghanistan

Unrest and ethnic oriented conflict has been part of Afghanistan's history coming from the manipulation of the population's differences in cultures, traditions and the education systems. The influence of political power and the educational systems in place have played a role in the observed conflicts and unrest in the region. Education systems that are biased to propagate an ideology from different sects plays a significant position in eruption of conflict. Changes in the education systems have been seen to erode the necessary national cohesion values by implanting in the minds of young people principles entrenched in intolerance for others.

This has been achieved through orientations targeting to change the existing systems and, directing the principles towards national cohesion. To achieve this, education needs to the more qualitative rather that based on logistical measure. It is seen that the international communities continue to linger on coming up with measures to implement education in the country. This is not an absolute sufficient measure for peace building efforts using education. More efforts to evaluate the quality of education are necessary. Quotation

"One of the first challenges of the new government in 1919 was to introduce a modern education system throughout the country"

The education system in the country is in ruin owing to the measures that have been taken to make changes to it and the much need for reforms in the country. Education has been viewed and the driver to sufficiently sought out changes and long lasting peace efforts with little regard to ideal strategies of implementation. The nationally held ideologies in traditions and cultures have continued to derail efforts made through the education system implementations by enforcing regional differences over the years.

The population of afghan ruling elite and the international community have a limited perspective as to the magnitude of the influence education has. Implementation of education in the region needs to consider the longer-term perspective since past implementations have been seen to lead to eruption of violence. The young generation needs information that will break down the differences in the region. The system also need to address the national issues and widely held values that will stem out these differences. This is an aspect that is not easy given the internal and external efforts made towards the end have come out short. There is a concern that education systems have been manipulated widely to enforce regional differences (Green, Preston, & Janmaat, 2006). The challenge of the government is to see to it this is not the case. Difficulty breeds further with the conflict among the internal and external political forces trying to gain control over the region.

The efforts made in changing the education system target the implementation of a national identity uniting the people. These efforts come out short because of the selfish needs the internal and external forces to propagate their own ideology.
