" Apple went on to insist that it demands "compliance" with its code of ethics through a "…rigorous monitoring programme, including factory audits, corrective action plans and verification measures" (Chamberlain, 2011).

A recent article published by the media company Al Jazeera (in Qatar) reports that Apple admitted "…some of its suppliers continue to overwork and underpay employees." Apple received heavy criticism for its factory work done by Foxconn so it opened the doors to investigators. The audits that Apple conducted shows that just 38% of its suppliers (including Foxconn and other suppliers) were living up to Apple's "own standard of a maximum 60-hour work week and minimum one day off per week" (Al Jazeera).

One-third of Apple's suppliers in China were found to be "…negligent in managing hazardous substances" and also one-third of its suppliers in china were "…below standard in injury prevention practice" (Al Jazeera). Moreover, Apple said it "forced suppliers last year to reimburse workers for about $3.3 million" that the workers had paid out of their own pockets to brokers to get those jobs at Foxconn in the first place (Al Jazeera).

The only reason that Apple began investigating the abuses and suicides in the Chinese plants is that "people have put pressure on them," the article in Al Jazeera claims.

In order to keep its subcontractors like Foxconn honest and fair with their employees, Apple said it would allow the "Fair Labour Association" (FLA) to "independently investigate and report on conditions in its suppliers" (Al Jazeera, p. 2).

In conclusion, now that there have been a total of 12 suicides at Foxconn plants in China, it is time for Apple to break off its business relations with the Foxconn supplier. All the investigations thus far show very poor -- even cruel and inhumane -- policies regarding employees. Further, since President Barack Obama has promised to give tax breaks to companies that bring their outsourced factories back to the United States, it is an ideal time for Apple to begin ending its association with Foxconn. Yes, it will cost Apple more to hire American workers, but the public relations value it will receive by showing Corporate Social Responsibility on American soil will far outweigh any slight trimming of profits for its stakeholders......
