While Simon attacks Cory more frontally, he also generalizes from Cory himself to the system of power that relies on others to "spread his wealth around" through these connections (2), and thus indicts a wider culture where Robinson downplays such generalization.

Simon also generalizes his persona more directly to the blue-collar worker who Cory patronizes by trying to associate with. When Cory gives to charity, Simon mocks this as having "the common touch" (23), which for someone in Cory's position as an accusation of condescension when the great man lowers himself to visit the poor areas to give money to the people Simon suggests made it for him in the first place. In spite of all this both authors point out how their characters want to be in his shoes. Simon curses his own life but his "mind was filled with wonder" (25) even though he paints Cory as involved in some shady business with the politicians and "power" (4) in the initial stanza.
Simon comes closer to actually speaking the question behind both of these works when realizing with shock that maybe what he and apparently everyone else wanted and works for, may not be what they think it is after all. If Cory was rich but killed himself, then maybe the factory life is not as bad as it seems, Simon's words leave unsaid but implied. This theme is much more hidden under Robinson's measured, cool tone of calmness on the "summer night" (15) Cory shocked everyone in a way none of them expected or understood, while they all struggled to achieve a dream they now must reassess.
