They also act as a reminder that she, her mother and her mother's mother before her have all ventured out into the unknown -- it is a woman's duty.

Her life with Somesh in contrast to her nervousness while they were together in India progresses nicely into a playful and happy union. They live with her in-laws as Somesh works hard to raise enough money for them to move out on their own while also taking care of his parents. This time acts as a protective cocoon for the burgeoning love and affection for one another and the complete transition of Mita into a married woman flourishing in a new world -- American. Here, as before, clothing expresses this newness and her comfort with it to the reader.

Somesh covertly buys her American clothing, in one instance jeans, "…the same pale blue as the nayantara flowers that grow in my parent's garden. The solid weight comforting." The earth and seed metaphor which initially symbolized their marriages capacity to grow and flourish now seems more of a symbol of her own personal growth from the earth that her husband will soon reside in.

Her widow's sari is white, "…a widow's color, color of endings." The encompassing nature of the fabric envelops her in her grief fueled collapse and takes her back to a time in her life when she flirted with the idea of drowning herself in the women's lake, but ultimately chose to live. This moment pushes her to make the choice to stay and live in America, making a life for herself through the foundation created by Somesh, rather than staying with her in-laws and feeling like a, "…dove with cut of wings." Her new future relates back to the almond outfit. Almonds have symbolized many things from fertility in marriage to everlasting love and hope......
