The attacks of 9/11 fundamentally changed the face of U.S. security concerns to focus primarily on domestic threats of terrorism perpetrated by foreign-based Islamic militarism.

Identify security trends that will impact the security field over the next 10 or more years:

In the next decades, there is a distinct risk that terrorists will acquire fissile materials for incorporation into nuclear devices.
Combined with Osama bin Laden's expressed intention to orchestrate a "nuclear holocaust" on the U.S., this may be the most serious threat to American domestic security in the near future.

Describe the limitations that security has in addressing security in the near future:

In many respects, security efforts are limited by the quality of intelligence gathered and the efficiency of its dissemination to appropriate authorities. The U.S. domestic security effort encompasses so many different agencies that it is very difficult to avoid some of the same obstacles of intelligence sharing that, in part, accounted for our failure to prevent the 9/11 Attacks despite having sufficient information available to do so (Dershowitz 2002)......
