The other measurement that this assessment gauges is that of needs. This section looks at what things that a person may be lacking in that would make them exhibit the behavior that they are currently displaying. It also looks at what things might be going on that would cause a person to reoffend at some later point in time. In John's case the things that are brought to light in his assessment are that he has issues with family relationships. His relationship with his parents and especially his mother appear to be his motivating factor for getting into trouble. It seems that ever since his sister was born there has been a strain in the relationship that John has with his mother. It has been theorized that John misbehaves in order to gain his mothers attention.

It does not appear that John has any other issues in regards to the needs assessment section. He did well in school when he was enrolled and has shown a desire to obtain his GED and join the military. He has worked at the same job for a period of time in which he has had no issues. He again has no issues with drugs or alcohol and appears to have everything that he could need provided by his parents.

Overall the assessment shows that John has a low risk of reoffending and presently requires regular supervision from the probation department. John and his family need to get family counselling in order to work through the problems that John is having at home. If he gets counselling and completes his probation John stands a chance of being a productive citizen of the community in the future......
