Existing teachers will be judged by how they meet this criterion when their performances are evaluated. Criteria can thus embrace both a sense of a standard, but also a list of ideals by which someone is judged.

In contrast, standards are usually defined solely as a certain bare minimum that all students or teacher must fulfill. Standards imply a certain baseline that an individual must meet, like being able to read and write at a certain grade level before being promoted. Standardized by definition means uniform, such as the concept of standardized testing where all students take the same test, such as the SAT, to show their fitness for entering college.
According the Free Dictionary (2009) standard may even connote possessing "acceptable" but "less than top quality." Similarly, basic skills are standards that all students must demonstrate at every grade level, but most teachers, parents, administrators and students hope that the education the students receive and the performance that students will demonstrate is above 'standard grade.'
