In Wilson's (2010) work, qualitative research was used in providing an accurate description of the characteristics of the culturally competent psychiatric nursing care provided to African-Americans from the viewpoints of the client and the nurse. It is worth noting that the intensive scrutiny that qualitative research has been subjected to has also subjected it to necessary criticism. Isbister (2000) for instance noted that qualitative research is largely a mystery to several healthcare service researchers. Such views are however noted to be subjective and may be influenced by a bias in opinion.

The work of Wilson (2010) which we are critiquing however appears to depict the application of the Culturally Competent Model of Care which treats cultural awareness, cultural skill, cultural encounter and cultural knowledge as critical components of the concept of cultural competence (Campinha-Bacote, 1994). According to this dynamic model, the concept of cultural competence is largely viewed as a continuous process and never as an end-point. The process is one that involves nurses continuously striving to work effectively within the existing cultural context of a person, families as well as communities that emanate from diverse ethnic/cultural backgrounds. This model is then applied within the concept of evidence-based practice within the healthcare settings.

I do agree with the author's conclusion since it reflects the true spirits of the Culturally Competent Model of Care which treats cultural awareness, cultural skill, cultural encounter and cultural knowledge as critical components of the concept of cultural competence. It is indeed true that the attitude, skill, knowledge as well as role of nurses in the provision of a culturally competent psychiatric/mental health care is a complex issue. The may perceive that they are indeed providing a culturally competent care when in reality they lack the requisite skills and knowledge as noted by Campinha-Bacote (2003)......
