Being a stranger in a strange land: the feeling of culture shock is both exciting but also unnerving. Even knowing the English language or being familiar with American culture through film and television does not mean we will not encounter culture shock in other ways. The subtle mannerisms and gestures, facial expressions, and other types of nonverbal communication prove complicating even when we know the spoken language. While some people are able to immigrate into a new country relatively smoothly and with little major issue, the culture shock present and adjustments needed when it comes to immigrating from a country like Sudan are substantial in many to most cases and therapy would be an integral part of meeting that challenge.

For example, someone getting married is presumably a good thing. However, it can be a huge adjustment and culture shock to shift from the single lifestyle to the married lifestyle. Beyond that are the factors that lead to the marriage. Of course, a blissful courtship and a smooth transition into newlywed status is the dream but there are many people that get married under less than optimal circumstances such as disapproving parents, hellish in-laws, getting married due to an unplanned pregnancy and getting married just to escape what is perceived to be a worse situation.
