The instrument that I would use to gather data would be the written survey method. The appropriate sample size would be 2000 patients and patients would be selected randomly from the pool of patients being discharged daily. There would be a quota to be met daily and participants would be randomly selected to participate in the survey until the quote for that day is met. The participants should be able to complete the survey within five minutes time and questions should be open-ended so that they can be easily analyzed and tabulated for quick analysis using quantitative analysis methods following the collection of data.

The survey method is appropriate for collecting data, as is the questionnaire method (Kazi & Khalid, 2012), from participants using closed questions that can be measured with yes/no answers or answers that may be measured using something like the Likert scale, which rates responses using numeric digits (1 to 5, for example) that indicate the participant’s feeling (Creswell, 2013).
The questionnaire method can be useful when questions are open-ended and allow participants to provide responses in their own words in a few sentences.

The interview method can be used as well and is particularly useful in qualitative research, such as phenomenological studies that seek to better understand the participant’s experience at a deeper level. For quantitative data, however, the survey method works sufficiently well in obtaining information that can provide useful knowledge about a particular subject.

For this scenario in which a sample of 2000 participants is desired, the survey method should work best because it allows for data to be obtained quickly and easily without too much encumbrance on participants as they are getting ready to leave the facility. Answering lengthy questions might diminish the patient’s view of the experience, so the short closed-question approach of the survey is the most considerate approach in this case.
