There are many qualified candidates out in the job market today. Candidates today are not simply competing with people nearby, but all over the world, particularly with the rise of telecommuting.

Knowing people on an intimate level in one's field conveys a vital advantage to job-seekers. Having friends in one's line of work can alert a candidate about job openings before they are posted.
