Dexter (The television series)

There is an increase of interest in Hollywood movies and television series set to expand on crime investigation. There are arguments as to how realistic these representations on the screen are in regards to real life experiences and this is what we aim to discuss in this paper with a focus on the television series, ?Dexter, ? which is still running almost eight years after its first appearance on screen. We will be focusing on what appears more realistic in regards to how forensic science is presented in the series while also directing the focus on Hollywood's distinct trademark. We will also look at how such TV series may influence real life and affect people's expectations.

When ?Dexter, ? The television series, started airing in 2006, there already were a few other serial television shows that embedded forensic investigation. But, this time, there was something new on the market. The Miami Homicide Forensics expert had also a night job, to pursue criminals and apply capital punishment to those he believed had managed to escape the justice system. As is always the case with television shows, reality is not exactly accurately pictured in these cases; in fact, TV crime dramas are least realistic when it comes to forensic science, though they may relate some aspects with how real life investigation is conducted.


Dexter, who works as a forensic blood spatter expert, uses his experience to punish criminals ?who deserve? To die on account of their deeds. What may pass for valid forensic is indeed Dexter's line of expertise, the analysis on blood pattern in order to recreate a crime scene. Although Alana Salzberg (2010) believes that ?bloodstain pattern analysis is completely unreliable? And that ?there are huge uncertainties associated with this evidence, ? (Innocence Blog) we cannot deny that it is a scientific method that can help in identifying a DNA profile which could be relevant to the crime investigation. There is continuous work to improve such methods and indeed forensic science has advanced and improved along with new technologies and scientific discoveries. In fact, that blood pattern analysis is the very basis of this particular TV show may have enhanced scientific interest in this respect. What we are trying to point here is that, though such a method has not been unanimously accepted by the scientific community of crime investigation, it is not complete phantasmagoria that which is presented in ?Dexter.
